Trade was carried on by land and river routes. Some important places like Peshawar (Pakistan), Mathura and Kaushambi (UP), Tamralipti (Bengal), Bharukaccha (Gujarat) and Ujjaini (MP) where all connected by roads.

The rivers, namely Ganga, Brahmaputra, Kaveri, Krishna and Godavari, provided waterways.
