Explain the policy of ‘Divide and Rule’ adopted by the British. What was its impact on the Indian princes?

‘Divide and Rule’ policy is the policy under which the British established friendly relations with the local princes to further their profits. The Indian rulers signed alliances to secure the help of the English military to settle their internal rivalries and hence divided whole India into small provinces.

After adopting this policy, the Indian princes became mere puppets in the hands of the English.
